Surface Albedo from Bidirectional Reflectance

چکیده
T o t a l hemispherical shortwave reflectance (albedo) is a major parameter of interest for studies of land surface climatology and global change. Efforts' to estimate albedo from remote sensing data have been constrained by the available instrumentation that typically provide observations of reflected radiance from a single view direction in narrow spectral bands'. However, the capability to obtain multiple angle observations over the shortwave region is planned for Earth Observing System sensots. In this paper, methods for estimating albedo from multiple angle, discrete wavelength band radiometer measurements' are examined. The methods include a numerical integration technique and the integration of an empirically derived equation fi)r bidirectional reflectance. The validity of the described techniques is examined by comparing albedo computed front multiband radiometer data with simultaneously acquired pyranometer data from vegetated and bare soil surfaces. Shortwave albedo estimated from both techniques agree favorably with the independent pyranometer measure-

Use of Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer bidirectional reflectance distribution function products to enhance simulated surface albedos
[1] Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) surface albedo at high spatial and spectral resolution is compared with other remotely sensed climatologies, ground-based data, and albedos simulated with the European Center/Hamburg 4 (ECHAM4) global climate model at T42 resolution. The study demonstrates the importance of MODIS data in assessing and improving albedo parameterizations i...

Snow-covered surfaces have a very high surface albedo, thereby allowing little energy to be absorbed by the snowpack. As the snowpack ages and/or begins to melt, the snow albedo decreases and more solar energy is absorbed by the snowpack. Therefore, accurate estimation of snow albedo is essential for monitoring the state of the cryosphere. This paper examines the retrieval of snow albedo using ...

Surface spectral bidirectional reflectance is a major parameter of interest to the biospheric sciences, remote sensing, and global change communities. For example, the pronounced reflectance peak at the back scattering range of vegetated surfaces, known as the “hot spot” or “opposition surge” (cf. Hapke 1993), is found to be closely related to the state of several biophysical and physical param...

SOILSPECT is a radiative transfer model, derived from Hapke's model, that represents the optical properties of soil from 450 nm to 2450 nm. The spectral and bidirectional reflectance of 26 soils was measured in the laboratory both with a field spectroradiometer (1000 narrow wavebands from 450 nm to 2450 nm) and a radiometer simulating TM channels (the five TM2, TM3, TM4, TM5, and TM7 broad band...
متن کاملA Comparison of Total Shortwave Surface Albedo Retrievals from Modis and Tm Data
Total shortwave albedo is one key variable controlling the radiation energy budget of the land surface. Thus, the monitoring of its spatial and temporal variations is one important issue e.g. for the application of climate models. Routine albedo products are available from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), e.g. MODIS MCD43A3 as 16-day 500m combined product generated fro...
